Silver Oak & Ovid Tasting

Well Twomey wines are not very good, 2020 Silver Oak Napa Cab is smoke tainted and 2021 Ovid is one of my top wines of the year. What a mixed bag. Here are the results.

  • 2024 Twomey Sauvignon Blanc – USA, California, North Coast
A simple wine with candied fruit, lime, floral and lemon. 50% Napa and 50% Sonoma. 91% Sauvignon Blanc. So many better. (86 pts.)
  • 2023 Twomey Pinot Noir Russian River Valley – USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Notes are correct and this is not a good Pinot. Commercial tasting with smoke, plastic, candied fruit and floral. A touch of oak but just not a Pinot I could drink. (78 pts.)
  • 2023 Twomey Pinot Noir Anderson Valley – USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley
This was so much better than the Russian River offering and not even close. This tastes like a cooler climate Pinot. Strawberries, floral, earth, perfume, spice and dust. Medium finish and balanced offering. 30% new oak (89 pts.)
  • 2021 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley – USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley
This was so much better than the smoke tainted 2020 Napa. Rich wine with dark chocolate, cassis, wood, spice, floral and blueberries. Very drinkable now but will age as well. 2 years in American oak. (92 pts.)
  • 2020 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley – USA, California, Napa Valley
Great teaching experience to others at this tasting as this is smoke tainted. They tried to say this is one of their best offerings in years which everyone knows no one made their best in 2020. Not much on the nose which is a good indicator of smoke taint. The Alexander 2021 had really nice fruit. On the palate chalk, wood, spice and dried flowers. NO fruit showing and again that harsh chalky tooth paste after taste. Hopefully no clueless critics gave this a good score but I am sure they did. Wine Disrupted and top 10 worst of the year slam-dunk.

  • 2020 Timeless From the Family of Silver Oak Soda Canyon Ranch Napa Valley – USA, California, Napa Valley
After the smoke tainted Napa Silver Oak was not expecting much but being unbiased as a critic this is outstanding but not cheap. Very dry in style which I like featuring wood, dark fruits, sawdust, coffee beans, blueberries, mint, leather and bitter chocolate. This is a drink on a pop and pour and consume over the next 5-8 years. (93 pts.)
  • 2021 Ovid Red Wine – USA, California, Napa Valley
Top 20 of the year candidate. This was a mixed bag tasting tonight but this was the rockstar by a landslide. While not 100 points by these critics it is outstanding. 20 months in French oak. 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 6% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot. A rich but balanced wine. Blueberries, minerals, spices, bitter chocolate, perfume, dust, cherry and wood. Long and concentrated finish. Excellent!!! (97 pts.)
