A really nice wine lunch

3 of us gathered at 3 Day Wine Review World Headquarters for a wine lunch. All 3 wines I have never sampled which always leads to a great event. The Don Melchor is on the block to drink now whereas the Silver Oak and Saxum should have a nice life ahead. Cheers!!!

2012 Concha y Toro Cabernet Sauvignon Don Melchor – Chile, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto (11/8/2019)
Day 1: This wine was rocking out of the gate but when it sat in the decanter became less interesting. You should pop and pour and consume this wine. Medium purple. Cherry, spice, plum, minerals and gravel. Very balanced and medium plus finish. Balanced. As stated earlier the wine became less interesting over the course of 3 hours. Got too much air. 93 points on the pop and pour. (93 points)

Day 2: Less intense and a shade of what it was yesterday which proved my theory this wine is a pop and pour wine. While it should age in the bottle a few more years I believe maximum enjoyment for this wine is now. 88 points
Recommendation: Drink now and don’t decant. (93 points)

2011 Saxum James Berry Vineyard – USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles (11/8/2019)
Day 1: This wine improve over the course of 3 hours. Up front too much floral and big fruit. Over time this wine added funk, spice, stone, cherry, blue currants and rose petals. Medium to long finish. Drinking well now but I could see this aging for another 10 years. 94 points (94 points)

Day 2: Rich wine with underbrush, spice, stone, concentrated fruit featuring cherries and plums and menthol. Nice floral elements on the lengthy finish. This has a long life ahead. 95 points
Recommendation: Drink now with a solid 2 hour decant or hold for at least a decade. (95 pts.)

2009 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley – USA, California, Napa Valley (11/8/2019)
Day 1: Up front a lot of oak and riper fruit. This also benefitted from time to open up and reveal spice, oak, blueberries, tobacco and plum. Nice concentrated fruit and medium plus finish. This could age for 5 plus years. 93 points (93 points)
Day 2: Not as good and showing some of the features I hate from Silver Oak. Eucalyptus and oak. Still some nice fruit but a shade of what this wine was day before. Lacks the concentration. 87 points
Recommendation: On a pop and pour and consume over a few hours you are in business. This is not one to carry over a few days. Drink now to 2024.
