We go through a lot of the following 2 wines. Dr. Loosen Dr. L and Mumm Brut Prestige. My wife loves both of them and prefers the Mumm Brut Prestige over many Champagnes including expensive ones. It certainly saves money! Both are at some great prices if you know what you are doing.
We will start with the Mumm Brut Prestige. Total Wine has the best price on this or do they? The answer is no. Morelli’s in St. Paul has a better sale price going on. Total Wine will price match but they won’t if their price ends in a 7. No worries Haskell’s has you covered. They will price match all of Morelli’s wines but you have to pay cash. I will be getting a case of this wine this Sunday at my local Haskell’s. Here are my recent reviews of the Mumm and I don’t recommend 3 day wine reviewing with most sparkling wines and Champagne.
NV Mumm Napa Brut Prestige – USA, California, Napa Valley (9/9/2018)
Baked apples, dough, lemon and spice. Another really good bottle. (90 points)
NV Mumm Napa Brut Prestige – USA, California, Napa Valley (5/27/2018)
Fresh and crisp. Apple, pear, minerals and orange peel. Really nice on the finish and a clean Sparkler. Best in the game under $20. (90 points)
NV Mumm Napa Brut Prestige – USA, California, Napa Valley (4/8/2018)
Really nice fruit featuring apple, pear, peaches. Good acidity and very balanced effort. Can’t say this enough how good this Sparkler is. (89 points)
NV Mumm Napa Brut Prestige – USA, California, Napa Valley (3/26/2018)
Another good showing of the most consistent Sparkling wine for the money in California and I would argue the US. Apple, pear, spices and chalk notes. Good acidity and medium finish. For under $16 can’t go wrong. (88 points)
NV Mumm Napa Brut Prestige – USA, California, Napa Valley (1/14/2018)
Solid again. Spice, sour apples, pear and dough notes. This is the best California Sparking wine for the price. For $15 a steal. (90 points)
Our next wine of consistency is the Dr. Loosen Dr. L. As the number one promoter of this wine in the Midwest I have sold thousands of cases of this wine and no commission for me. The only off bottle in a while was the one on 8/9. 2016 is better if you can find it.
2017 Loosen Bros. Riesling Dr. L – Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (10/19/2018)
Cabin Wines in Winter; 10/17/2018-10/19/2018: Day 1: better than the last bottle. pear, sour apple, stone and wafer. 88 points
Day 2: Very similar and still features vibrant fruit. 88 points (88 points)
2017 Loosen Bros. Riesling Dr. L – Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (8/9/2018)
Fitting that I am the first to review this wine. As the single biggest promoter of this wine in the US I am proud to give you this review.
Day 1: Nice acidity and refreshing wine which is perfect for another 90 plus degree day in Minneapolis. Lemon, orange peel, stone and lime. Not as concentrated as the 2016 which had the classic peach character. This is very pleasant but does not approach Kabinett status as the 2016 did and exceeded many producers. While see how this pans out on day 2.
Day 2: Picks up some match stick but tastes like a $9 wine. A shame compared to other vintages. 85 points
Day 3: Similar to day 2.
Recommendation: Try and find the 2016 of this wine. (85 points)
2016 Loosen Bros. Riesling Dr. L – Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (8/8/2018)
Day 3 and this is rocking! Peach skin, slate, lemon, dust and vibrant acidity. This tastes like a $20 plus Kabinett from a good vintage. This is easily the world’s best wine under $10 year in and year out! 91 points (91 points)
2016 Loosen Bros. Riesling Dr. L – Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (6/12/2018)
This is the best bottle from this line I have ever tasted. Drinking like a Kabinett with lemon, slate, match stick and stone fruit. Medium finish and amazing acidity. For $8.99 the best wine for under $10 in the world on a regular basis (excludes closeouts I get). (91 points)
