Twin Cities Wine Club Syrah/ Shiraz Tasting

  • 2006 Mollydooker Shiraz Blue Eyed Boy – Australia, South Australia
Hosted a Blind Tasting of Syrah. Always fun to know what the wines are. Medium purple. Underbrush, spices, blueberries, coffee beans and subtle funk on the nose later on. This wine has aged well. My third favorite of the day. 92 points.
Day 3: Some left in the bottle. Black pepper, underbrush, spices and dark fruits. Still holding up.
Day 3.5: This is a really interesting wine on the last pour. Tar, crushed rock, blueberries on steroids, black pepper and violets. Really interesting and complex. Even better. 94 points
Recommendation: These are going to be good on a pop and pour but I still see five years of cellaring in its future. (94 pts.)
  • 2004 Glaetzer Godolphin – Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Love the 2004 vintage around the world! Spice, White pepper, blueberries, earth and floral notes. 15 points total and wine of the day. I have to say this wine evolved late in the day. Drink now to 2022. Well done Gary as I sent him home with a bottle of the Sleight of Hand Levitation as the wine of the day. Wine of the day! (92 pts.)
  • 2006 Clarendon Hills Syrah Piggott Range Vineyard – Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Clarendon
Eucalyptus overload. My least favorite wine of the day. Wild game, chewy tannins and bitter. Time has not done well for this wine. Drink now? 88 points
Day 3: Glad I saved some of this wine. This is too young at this point. Day 3 reveals cherry, blueberries, spices, menthol, floral, white pepper and tar. Medium plus finish. 90 to 93.
Recommendation: Hold for 5 years. (90 pts.)
  • 2015 K Vintners Syrah The Beautiful – USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
This is a floral driven wine. White pepper, floral notes, raspberries, spices and earth. This is not a big wine but Northern Rhone like. Very complex in a sublet way. Not as good as a year ago buy solid. My second favorite wine of the night.
Day 2: Time has not helped this wine as the previous two bottles. Floral, black olives, pepper and damp earth. Fruit is muted and shorter finish. Just uninspired on this wine on day 2. 89 points
Day 3: Never give up! Better than day 2 with floral, perfume, spices, blueberries, graphite, black olives and stone. Medium to long finish. Holy cow what a transformation! This is a gorgeous wine. 94 points
Recommendation: I would let these sleep until 2023. They were great out of the gate but might be moving into dumb phase. (94 pts.)
  • 2014 gargantua Syrah Oregon Syrah – USA, Oregon
Well went with this one over the California wine. Someone does not understand Syrah based on their Cellar Tracker Review. This features Cherry, rose petals and spice. Short finish. Light wine. Not a lot of Syrah profile. Got a bit better over time but not something I would pay over $20.
Day 2: Small pour left. Pepper, hardly any fruit. It is drinkable but lacks focus. 87 points (88 pts.)
  • 2010 Two Hands Shiraz Samantha’s Garden – Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
Menthol, big fruits, floral and spices. Medium plus finish. This is in a good place. Drink now to 2022. 3rsd place today! (91 pts.)
  • 2004 Arcadian Syrah Hommage à Max – USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley
My slam dunk wine of the day! Funk, funk and more funk!!! Great color featuring funk, Bing cherries, plum, spice and floral notes. Medium to long finish. This wine is just starting to hit its stride. I believe this is one of the great Syrah’s of the US!!! Received 13 total points! (94 pts.)
  • 2009 Sleight of Hand Syrah Levitation – USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
Medium purple color. White pepper, blueberries, floral, and earth. This wine is on the decline. Drink immediately. I liked it but overall no first 3 votes. 90 points. (90 pts.)
