South Lyndale Liquors Fall Sale 2018

CABERNET SAUVIGNON
2014 Andrew Will Cabernet Sauvignon – USA, Washington, Columbia Valley (9/26/2018)
Day 1: Really nice fruit but not over the top and very little heat. Blueberries, plums, sour cherries, spices, oak and coffee beans. This is quite complex and tastes more like a $50 plus wine. Long finish! Could even get better on day 2 and 3. 92 points (92 points)

2014 Andrew Will Cabernet Sauvignon – USA, Washington, Columbia Valley (4/24/2018)
Day 1: Medium purple. Bigger style wine. Nose of cherry, spice, menthol, cedar and mint. Palate is full of flavors including spice, cherry, plum, menthol and chocolate. Medium to long finish and absolutely brilliant wine. Normally I don’t like Andrew Will wines this young but this delivers. I look forward to the evolution over 3 days. 92 plus
Day 2: Little more melow on the nose. Spices, cherry, menthol, cedar and floral notes. Similar on the palate and medium plus finish. Excellent value Cabernet and if it was from Napa $80 plus. 92 points plus.
Day 3: Really singing on day 3 with menthol, cherry, plums, underbrush, cedar and dark chocolate. This is a very concentrated wine and powerful but not the oak monster that I have grown to hate! I see this wine aging for 10 plus years. 92 plus
Recommendation: Hold for 5 years but if you drink now 3 hour plus decant. (92 points)
WHY BUY THIS? If these were from Napa they would cost $50. This is the best Cabernet I have had all year for under $25.
PRICE: $23.99

2016 Substance Cabernet Sauvignon – USA, Washington (9/18/2018)
Day 1: A big wine with blueberries, Bing cherries, smoke, oak and vanilla. Finishes strong and you can taste the oak. This wine is similar to some of the oak barrel wines from Napa but at a fraction of the price. Very much a guilty pleasure wine. 90 points
Day 2: More mellow than the intensity of day 1. Fruit is not as vibrant and a little astringent. The drop off tells me this is a pop and pour wine. 85 points
Recommendation: Drink now. (90 points)
WHY BUY THIS? It is $12.99 so not a big investment and better than 99 out of 100 wines in that price range.
PRICE: $12.99

SKIP ME!!! PENLEY ESTATE CRAP WINE WINE SPECTATOR GAVE THIS 93

2016 Penley Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Phoenix – Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra (9/26/2018)
Day 1: Of course skeptic of the 93 WS rating. Light purple in color. Eucalyptus is heavy. Spices, earth and rose petals. Big jammy fruit. This is a bit high on alcohol at 15%. I don’t love it and don’t hate it. I could see some enjoying this while Bordeaux drinkers hating it. 87 points
Day 2: Much less over the top Eucalyptus. Fruit is showing better and not so jammy. Spices and sharp acidity. This tastes more like a poorly made Aussie Shiraz than a Cabernet. A terrible effort on day 2. 82 points (85 points) $15.99

SPARKLING/CHAMPAGNE
NV Mumm Napa Brut Prestige – USA, California, Napa Valley (9/9/2018)
Baked apples, dough, lemon and spice. Another really good bottle. (90 points)
WHY BUY THIS? This is the best Sparkling wine in the world for under $20 year in and year out!
PRICE: $16.99

N.V. Vilmart & Cie Champagne Grand Cellier (France, Champagne)
WHY BUY THIS? This is the best Champagne House in the World!!!
PRICE: $66.99 Not great but not bad.

N.V. Jacques Chaput Champagne Tradition Brut (France, Champagne)

WHY BUY THIS? Champagne for $27.99 and a friend gave this 90 points!
PRICE: $27.99

2014 Argyle Vintage Brut – USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley (3/5/2018)
Day 1: Light gold. Fragrant with citrus, floral, spices and dough. The palate is complex for the price tag and has really nice acidity.
Day 2: Not always recommended for a Sparkling Wine but this still delivers. Crisp and vibrant with more apple/pear than the citrus the previous day. Dough, spices and chalk on the palate. Medium plus finish and a great QPR offering. Paid $17.50 after taxes for this little gem. Best price in the country according to Wine Searcher. (90 points)
WHY BUY THIS? It is under $20 and better than half the NV Champagnes out there.
PRICE: $18.99

SPANISH WINES
2007 R. López de Heredia Rioja Crianza Viña Cubillo (Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja) $19.99
2008 La Rioja Alta Rioja Viña Ardanza Reserva – Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja (6/14/2018)
Day 1: This wine is outstanding! Slow ox for 2 hours. Nice fruit featuring Bing cherries and blueberries. Oak is present but settle down after an initial taste. Classic Rioja with leather, minerals and spices. On the finish picks up some mint elements. This is a super complex effort with a medium to long finish. I see this wine aging well for a decade. One of the better QPRs of the year. 93-95.
Day 2: Interesting on this wine. While I thought it might improve the opposite happened. Wine lacked the fruit and complexity of day 1. If I were to rate it on day two 87 points would have been given.

Recommendation: This is why I experiment over 3 days. This wine is a day 1 pop and pour and see the evolution over the night. I would actually consume these within 3 years for maximum enjoyment. (93 points) $34.99
2010 La Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri Rioja Reserva (Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja) $26.99

  1. Love this shop. Two blocks from my house. I will have to try the Andrew Will Cab as I have not had many vintages since 2005.
